What is Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)?

Tooth morphology consists of layers. There is the outermost enamel layer, under it the dentin layer, and the innermost soft tissue layer called pulp, which is connected to the root canals and contains the vessels and nerves that feeds the tooth. Root canal treatment is required when the pulp is infected with bacteria due to rot or fracture. It is a very common treatment method in routine dentistry.

When is root canal treatment required?

At the beginning of the conditions that require root canal treatment, there is deepened caries whose treatment is delayed. Tooth fractures, leaking old restorations, trauma, advanced gum disease are also some of the causes.

How do we know when root canal treatment is needed?

  • Hot and cold sensitivity
  • Pain on chewing and pressure
  • Night pain
  • Pimple-like formations on the gums
  • It can be understood by radiographic examination in cases that do not cause symptoms in the early period.

If the tooth requiring root canal treatment is not treated, abscess formation is observed in the bone at the end of the root canals. In advanced cases, facial swelling can be seen.

How make is root treatment?

Since root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia, pain is not felt during the procedure.
Damaged and infected tissues in the tooth are cleaned. The nerves and vessels in the canals are also cleaned and the teeth are disinfected. Then the gaps are filled with tissue compatible filling materials.

Although the duration of the procedure varies according to the tooth, it usually varies between 1-3 sessions. There may be pain for a few days after the procedure, but this is temporary.
